Orvis SSR Disc Spey Reel
Description
The Orvis SSR Disc Spey Reel is purpose-built for two-handed fishing, with the weight, capacity, and drag performance needed to balance everything from light Trout Spey rods to full-size salmon and steelhead setups. Available in three sizes, the SSR lets us match reel weight and capacity to the rod rather than settling for a conventional single-hand reel.
Machined from solid bar-stock aluminum, the SSR uses extensive porting to help running line and backing drain and dry quickly. That becomes particularly important during cold-weather steelhead fishing, where trapped water can freeze and cause problems at exactly the wrong time.
A sealed disc drag provides a wide range of usable pressure. At the lower end, it's smooth and sensitive enough to protect lighter Trout Spey tippets. When heavier tackle and bigger fish demand it, the drag can be cranked down for considerably more stopping power.
Small details show that this reel was designed by anglers who actually fish two-handed rods. The oversized drag knob is easy to reach, with a tactile outdent that lets us judge its position without looking away from a running fish. Even the reel foot has rounded edges to help prevent leaders from kinking when they accidentally wrap around it.
From swinging soft hackles for trout to chasing winter steelhead and salmon, the Orvis SSR Disc Spey Reel is a durable, well-balanced reel designed specifically for the demands of modern two-handed fishing.
