The Hardbody Leech is Umpqua Signature Tyer Russell Miller’s modern take on a heavy, fast-sinking leech—built around one key feature: a tungsten belly that gets the fly down quickly while keeping a clean, natural profile in the water.

Originally developed in 2009 during Russell’s early competition days, the pattern was inspired by a mentor’s unique approach to streamer weighting. Over time, it evolved into a simpler, more effective fly—because Russell firmly believes the best patterns rely on three materials or fewer, and the Hardbody Leech is no exception.

This fly sinks fast, swims with an incredibly lifelike leech movement, and hides the weight beautifully, making it a versatile weapon for both moving and still water. While it began life as a heavy anchor fly, it’s since proven deadly for stillwater trout and has even notched wins in events like the Denver Carp Slam.
