Maple Syrup
One of Maine's most famous trout flies, the Maple Syrup was developed by Maine fly tyer Alvin Theriault as a simple but deadly imitation of large Hexagenia and drake mayfly nymphs. Originally designed for brook trout and landlocked salmon in Maine's ponds and lakes, the pattern has earned a reputation far beyond New England thanks to its ability to fool selective fish with an incredibly simple profile.
The sparse yellow tail and tan chenille body closely suggest the shape and color of large mayfly nymphs. Fish it deep and slow along weed beds, drop-offs, muddy bottoms, or anywhere large mayflies are present. While it was born as a Hex nymph imitation, many anglers fish the Maple Syrup as a general searching pattern whenever trout are feeding subsurface.
