West Virginia's rugged mountains and clear, fast-flowing rivers make it one of the East's most underrated fly fishing destinations. Hundreds of miles of cold streams wind through the Appalachian highlands, offering excellent trout fishing in a setting that feels far removed from busy cities and crowded waters. It's a state where wild scenery and mountain traditions remain a big part of the experience.

The state's best-known trout waters include the Elk, Cranberry, Williams, Shavers Fork, and Greenbrier Rivers, along with countless smaller mountain streams tucked away in the Monongahela National Forest. Rainbow, brown, brook, and native Appalachian brook trout provide outstanding fishing throughout the year, while many streams reward anglers willing to hike beyond the road.

West Virginia also offers excellent warmwater fishing for smallmouth bass, musky, carp, and panfish in its larger rivers and reservoirs. Whether drifting a famous trout stream, wading a rocky river for bronzebacks, or exploring a secluded mountain creek, West Virginia delivers the kind of authentic Appalachian fly fishing that keeps anglers coming back year after year.
