New Mexico offers one of the most unique fly fishing experiences in the West. High mountain forests, deep canyons, alpine lakes, and desert rivers create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the country. With over 3,000 miles of fishable streams, anglers can spend the morning casting to wild trout beneath towering pines and finish the day watching the sun set over red rock mesas.
Trout are the main attraction, with healthy populations of rainbow, brown, brook, and native Rio Grande cutthroat trout found throughout the state. The San Juan River below Navajo Dam has earned international recognition as one of America's premier tailwaters, producing incredible numbers of large trout and consistent fishing every month of the year. Smaller streams like the Pecos, Cimarron, Chama, and upper Rio Grande offer everything from technical dry fly fishing to secluded backcountry adventures.
Warmwater anglers will also find outstanding opportunities for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, carp, and northern pike in New Mexico's reservoirs and lower rivers. Whether exploring a remote mountain stream or wading a famous tailwater, New Mexico delivers incredible fishing in landscapes that are every bit as memorable as the fish themselves.
