Connecticut may be one of New England's smaller states, but it offers an impressive variety of fly fishing opportunities. From scenic trout streams winding through the Litchfield Hills to tidal estuaries along Long Island Sound, anglers can enjoy productive fishing throughout the year. Its central location and abundant public access make Connecticut a favorite destination for both local anglers and visitors alike.
The Farmington River is the crown jewel of Connecticut fly fishing and is widely regarded as one of the finest tailwaters in the Northeast. Its cold, consistent flows support healthy populations of brown and rainbow trout, with dependable hatches that reward both dry fly and nymph anglers. Beyond the Farmington, numerous stocked rivers, wild trout streams, lakes, and ponds provide excellent fishing for trout, bass, pike, and panfish.
When the weather warms, many fly anglers shift their focus to Long Island Sound. Connecticut's saltwater fishery is known for excellent striped bass and bluefish action, with tidal rivers, rocky shorelines, and shallow flats offering exciting opportunities throughout the season. The combination of outstanding trout water and a productive saltwater fishery gives Connecticut an uncommon level of diversity for a state its size.
