The Kaufmann Stonefly Nymph is one of the most trusted and effective stonefly imitations ever created. Designed by legendary tier Randall Kaufmann, this pattern perfectly captures the bulky profile, lifelike movement, and natural drift of real stonefly nymphs that live along the bottoms of clean, fast-moving rivers.

Stonefly nymphs are a major food source for both trout and steelhead. Juvenile steelhead feed heavily on them while growing in the river, and that imprint often carries into adulthood, making stonefly patterns a smart choice when targeting returning fish. If a river holds a healthy population of stoneflies, you can bet predators are used to seeing—and eating—them.

Because stonefly nymphs are poor swimmers, they frequently get knocked loose from rocks and tumble helplessly through riffles and pocket water. This pattern imitates that easy meal perfectly. Fish it deep through fast runs, along rocky structure, or as a heavy lead fly in a nymph rig for aggressive, confidence-building strikes year round.
