I first started developing this pattern back in the 90’s. At that time the most common stone nymph available was the Kauffman’s Stone. While this pattern fit the bill for shape and size it has one major drawback, it’s almost impossible to sink it in swift, deep runs. The Atomic Stone was designed to sink, and sink fast. Starting with the heavy tungsten bead followed by a lead wrap, and then the placement of the lead along the sides. The lead sides do two things for the fly, first they give the fly extra weight needed to sink, and secondly, they create the basic shape of the stone nymph without having to create too much bulk with dubbing. By keeping the dubbing thin the fly will not trap air, thus adding to its sink rate even more. Over the years I have refined the fly, adding the feather stem antenna, the addition of rubber legs, and the last addition, (one of the best in my opinion), is the addition of gills. Large mature Salmon Fly nymphs have very prominent white gills under their thorax. Most patterns today omit this attribute. I think the white gills create a trigger for trout as it creates just enough flash without over doing it, as well as matching the natural insect drifting through the current. Over the years this pattern has been responsible for many great days on the water, most of the time being the sole pattern responsible for hook ups. The pattern is very durable, and can easily take the abuse that even post spawn Redsides can dish out. Once spring hits there’s no debate on what fly pattern goes on point for the basic nymph rig.” – Signature Tyer Brian Hudspeth

Bob Quigley, the king of the "film” designed the Film Critic to match mayflies at their most vulnerable stage of the hatch, while emerging from nymph to dun. Warm mid–summer waters, smallmouth aggressively attacked soft plastic baits, like Bass Assassins, and began to frequently ignore fly offerings. So it was to soft plastic resins that Blane turned to create a new style of fly that would have the realistic look and feel of these successful spin baits. The result was a very soft, flexible — and self–sticking – plastic called SiliSkin. Once mastered it is very easy to work with. Flies can be "assembled" quickly, with the end result being a very realistic baitfish imitation, one that has both color and translucency, is soft and decidedly realistic and finally, amazingly durable. (**A Gummy trick: sacrifice one fly and pull the tail right off. Now, push the broken ends back together, work it around with fingers, Voila! Re–attached. Now slowly pull on the tail end. The effectiveness of this size and see–through color was proven for False Albacore when they fed heavily on micro–baits, what they call "jelly with eyes". It became their secret weapon and kept them always in the hunt. Typically, the Jumbo Juju is fished under an indicator, hanging anywhere from 1–20 feet down, usually in tandem with at least one other fly, be it another Jumbo Juju in another color or a callibaetis nymph or other still water bug. Fishing on the "hang" like this can get boring if you're not catching a fish every few minutes, so in that case I will sometimes resort to a S–L–O–W hand twist retrieve to keep me busy. The JJJ is better and different than other Chiros in that it is much more durable (epoxy coated), has much better segmentation and has the slightest bit of flash to it. Most chiros are simple thread and wire patterns, leaving little room for expansion beyond a single basic color and a contrasting rib. The JJJ has multi–hued ribbing over a bright white underbody and a top coat of epoxy that all combine to add to the sheen and division between the colors. Although it was intended for two species, I’ve managed trout, bass, and many species of sunfish on it. I developed the Draggin’ Nymph after watching a creek entomology presentation held by a biologist for Texas Parks & Wildlife. There were a lot of dragonfly nymphs in the sampling that they had brought for the presentation. Since a lot of the dragonfly nymph patterns are either not as thick as I’d like or don’t have much movement, I figured I would try to make something to remedy that. The Senyo’s Laser Dub abdomen is the most crucial and unique part of this fly. It was something I just kind of stumbled upon. I tie a lot with Laser Dub and was burning some frayed thread on a streamer I had tied when I got a little careless and scorched the Laser Dub head. I realized the melted Laser Dub hardened and fused the dubbing together. Since dragonfly nymphs were fresh in my mind from the entomology presentation, I immediately thought of a dragonfly abdomen. I went through a lot of testing before settling on the final product. There were two main problems I was dealing with. The first was I needed to be able to drag the fly on the bottom without hanging up. The second was when thrown loosely together in a box, the hooks would tangle in the Laser Dub abdomen and it was hard to get out. Once I realized a barbless jig hook would solve both of these issues, the final product soon followed." - Signature Tyer Josh Smitherman

As the East sweeps away the dead bodies and Cicadaphobes can again brave the outdoors, it is the perfect time, while their endless droning song remains fresh in your minds, to introduce... One thing you'll notice when comparing real Hydropsyche to my imitation is that the back on the GTi does not necessarily match any of the color combinations of the real insect. This isn't by chance. I've spent a fair bit of time tying and trying Caddis larva imitations and I've come to learn a bit about what fish prefer in the process. For reasons unknown to me, Trout consistently prefer this fly when tied with a shell back color that contrasts the under body. Its origins are a little sketchy. I’d love to tell you a fancy design story, but the truth is I bought some Wapsi rainbow sow scud dubbing because it looked fishy to me. I tied 4 flashy nymphs (Rainbow Warriors) using the Wapsi rainbow dubbing, along with pearl tinsel, red thread, pearl glass beads, and pheasant tail, and stuck them in one of my nymph boxes. There they sat, untested, dry, fishless… months passed… until one day on my local tailwater with fussy Trout, I encountered fish that I could see were actively feeding, but were not taking my go-to patterns with as much regularity as I was used to. I tried all my standard patterns and caught a fish here and there, but was not catching as many as normal, nor as many as I felt I should based on the activity level of the fish.

So, I then dug into my "try me” flies. These flies are often the result of a late-night tying binge that ends with some sort of strange, out of the box conglomeration that my tired brain thinks might fool a dumb fish. It doesn’t happen often, but this time I was right! Anyway, I tied on one of those flashy little flies and proceeded to catch fish, after fish, after fish. So much so, that I went to work the next day and told my then employers, Mickey and Byron of Fish Tech Outfitters in Salt Lake City, that I had cracked the code! Being veterans of the fly fishing retail world, I’m sure they thought to themselves, "oh, great, another fisherman is telling us how his fly is the best”, since this sort of story often plays out in fly shops. To their credit, rather than dismissing the pattern, they sensed my excitement and kindly asked me to tie a couple dozen for the store, and we’d see how they worked for our customers. I tied two dozen that evening, brought them to work the following day, and I sold them to any willing takers.

The few that bought, came back quickly wanting more. This process repeated itself for several months, during which time I tied 133 dozen rainbow warriors for the shop. I got a little tired of tying Rainbow Warriors for others, and with the help of Mickey and Byron, asked our Umpqua sales rep how to have a custom pattern tied. He gave us a quick rundown of the process, and carefully reminded us that there was a 10 dozen minimum order per size to do a custom tie, thinking this might dissuade us. We scoffed a bit, and told him we had already sold hundreds of dozens in the last few months so 10 dozen wouldn’t be a problem. The rep was surprised, asked to see the fly, and then suggested that if we are selling that many, perhaps he should consider adding it to the Umpqua catalog. I hadn’t ever considered this as a possibility, but was very excited at the opportunity! Long story short, it has been available for Umpqua dealers ever since. We’ve added some variations over the years. First was to add colors. In addition to the original pearl color, I added red and black versions, all with glass beads.

Next, we did the pearl color with a silver tungsten bead. Then, an extra heavy version featuring a lead wire underbody to add weight to the tungsten version. This is a popular dropper fly on large western rivers often fished below a foam dry fly. The most recent additions are a jigged (popular for Euro nymphing) version of the pearl color, and tungsten versions of the red, and black colored warriors, as well as a purple bodied tungsten warrior, and a pink beaded version that is tied with pink thread.

I’m often asked if the Rainbow Warrior works for picky fish, if it’s effective in clear water situations, in spring creeks and tailwaters, if it works for wild fish, etc… It does, it is, definitely, and of course! Despite its non-imitative looks, Salmonids seem to like it. My advice is don’t worry about "why” fish eat it. Just be happy they do.”

- Signature Tyer Lance Egan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0696/9874/8700/products/Rainbow_Warrior_Egan_pearl_1ded1afd-c348-4cc4-aede-1921e4d810e8.jpg?v=1684936572
juju-baetis-umpqua-baetis
Juju Baetis - Umpqua

The Juju baetis has become THE baetis pattern in the years since its inception.
